The monolingual dictionary, it is argued with good reasons, is a more adequate tool in foreign language learning since it gives more help to the learner by providing definitions in the target language as well as illustrative examples to reinforce the given definitions. For learners, the clear advantage of the bilingual dictionary lies in the ease and quickness with which it helps them understand unfamiliar words in the foreign language.
Many studies show that foreign language learners tend to favor using bilingual dictionaries rather than monolingual dictionaries for decoding activities such as reading and translation (Atkins 1985 Cowie 1999).
